![]() Oh yeah, I was kind of experiencing a personal feeling for me I’d never really known. I imagine it must have been quite emotional on those shows with the audience reactions. You look at the moment you’re in, it’s great – the sun shining or whatever, but be in that moment, don’t think about yesterday or the fact there’s no tomorrow, just do it. The thing is you think “well I’m going to die”, and it’s very hard to keep your mind off that idea but you think “you’re not dying now, you’ve got this last amount of time left” and just make the most of it. I suppose being in that situation makes you focus on enjoying the present.Įxactly that was the only thing I could do. I don’t know, the feeling of being on stage when you’ve got no future, no past there’s just a blank, so everything you are is concentrated on that moment on stage, it can be very very good. The feeling of being on stage and everybody knowing you’re going to die, it’s very hard to go wrong. I thought “Right, I’m going to die” and set out and managed a farewell tour in the UK, I did gigs in Japan, saying goodbye to my friends, and they were some of the best gigs I’ve ever done. I decided not to go searching for any miracle cures or anything like that. I was diagnosed with an inoperable and terminal cancer in 2013 and given 10 months to live, and they said they couldn’t do anything, so I thought about it and decided I was going to make the most of the ten months. The last four or so years of my life have been very strange. You turn 70 in July – an age that a few years ago nobody expected you to reach. I know there’s a Finnish Wilko, there’s a Wilko Gonzales in Spain and there are a couple of Wilkos in New Zealand, so the whole idea is catching on slowly. It’s not only me – I know of probably ten or eleven people around the world called Wilko. It’s a long and not particularly complicated story but that’s what I’ve been since the age of 25. I spoke to him about the show and about his diagnosis a few years ago with terminal inoperable cancer – and his subsequent recovery. ![]() ![]() Though his fate was left unknown, Ilyn was presumably killed during the Battle of King's Landing along with the rest of the Lannister's allies.Wilko Johnson celebrates his 70th birthday this year as well as 30 years of the Wilko Johnson band. Ilyn's name was also mentioned in season 4 ahead of Tyrion Lannister's planned execution. The character remained on Arya Stark's kill list for the majority of the series. Despite Johnson's absence, Ilyn was still lingering offscreen in Game of Thrones. Although he didn't have a speaking role, Ilyn would have remained a loyal member of House Lannister. As of 2014 Johnson has been cancer-free, and he continues with his career as a musician at the age of 73.Īs for Ser Ilyn Payne, the character most likely would have had a recurring role in Johnson was able to continue acting. He then had successful surgery after believing he had less than a year to live. Despite refusing treatment for the terminal scenario, Johnson later learned that he had a more survivable form of the disease. In 2013, Johnson announced that he was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer. Due to his condition, the character of Ilyn Payne began to be phased out of the series. Johnson's health began to decline around 2012, which coincided with Game of Thrones season 2.
